Artist Trading Cards

Color pencil and ink.
This is what happens when you scan stuff too quickly. Now I have to wait for the show to end before I can post a descent scan.

By the way this was hand made. Yeah it looks like a vector but is not. I made them while watching TV. It helps when I have two things going on at the same time.

Upstate Fancy

What IS Upstate Fancy?

Up•state Fan•cy [uhp-steyt fan-see]

adjective

1. not exorbitant or extravagant by city standards, however in a rural setting ( like upstate new york) it is in fact, quite fancy

2. a wonderful blog dedicated to art, design and other great things that are indeed upstate fancy.

Started in 2008 by graphic designer and all around crafty girl Jen Pepper. Upstate Fancy is dedicated to bringing you a glimpse of things that really stand out from independent designers, artists, and all around crafty people. Sometimes is serious, sometimes it’s silly, but it’s always short and sweet. Just like that peice of vegan treats cake I had the other day, $6.50 for a piece of cake? Now that’s upstate fancy.

New and revamped artwork

Serene Monsters (acrylic and color pencil)

Señor Luchador (acrylic, markers, ink, gold spray)

Squishy and FrankenOctoKitty (felt and ultra soft)

Pink Luchador (felt, fleece and buttons)

This is some of my new and revamped work, just in time for the upcoming show Small Stuff 3. I revamped some plushies I made earlier this year and made some new paintings based on character sketches. This show opens November 22 and runs through January 9, 2010. Unlike other shows the theme of this event is "cash & carry", in other words, you pay for it, you take it home on the spot. I'm really looking forward to seeing the work made for this show. See you at the gallery early! :) To purchase any piece from the show go here.

Published pictures in Level Magazine

Level Magazine a latin pop culture Miami publication has a new November issue dedicated to "El Día De Los Muertos" (Day of the dead). They were kind enough to publish two of my pictures from Día De Los Muertos, Merida 2007, after finding them through Joshua's flickr (also in the collage). Denn Rodriguez is published on the first and second page of the picture collage, with a name mention on the second page. Get the magazine on stands today or see their virtual publication. (pictures in pages 84-87).

Painted Señor Luchador in progress

This weekend I started the final piece for Bear and Bird's Small Stuff 3 show, Señor Luchador. He is based on a luchador sketch a did a few weeks back. The background is gold, metallic spray with gloss spray. I still need to do some small shadows, the chest hair and the tattoo. I hope I can finish him this week so I can finally turn everything in to Bear and Bird on Saturday or Sunday.

Zombies Were People To

I spent most of my day fallowing the re-animated body of Lenin today. He says he's come back to make the world a better place. Believe or not he also speaks really good English.

MasterMind Awards® Submission

If you are an artist from the Broward or Palm Beach area you definitely know about the New Times MasterMind Awars®. If you don't... well... I'm sorry. The application deadline was yesterday at 5pm.

Is good to have friends that remind you of these things. I had completely forgotten about it until fellow artist Joshua Surprenant gave me a call to ask if I was submitting something. I spent a good part of my afternoon putting files and links together. I finally got around to putting an artist resume together and I made the deadline, with 30 minutes to spear. Winners will be announced at Artopia. The only thing that's left now to do is to cross my fingers.

OCTOkitty Buttons and stickers

OctoKitty button set

For sale @ my etsy store

So many buttons!!!

Today I spent most of the night creating the OctoKitty button set and pairing them with some OctoKitty stickers I already had. These sets are for sale in my etsy store.

Serene Monsters for Small Stuff 3

6 x 6 canvas, ready to hang.

This weekend I gave Serene Monster the final touch, made the background lighter, added a bit of shadow, made the monsters eyes and gave it an UV coating. I was thinking on giving it a gloss coating but I always have problems with that spray and I really wasn't in the mood to mess the painting up. So UV spray it is.

The painting will be part of the show Small Stuff 3 @ Bear and Bird gallery. Show opens Nov. 22 and unlike other shows this time when you buy it you can take it home on the spot. I'm planning on getting there early to see all the pieces and buy some before they are gone.

Tattooed Luchador

I like to always have more than one project in the works. Currently I'm working on a painting for the Small Stuff 3 Show, but I also decided to upgrade an original character I haven't work with in a long, long time. Coming soon as a plush, the new an improved Señor Luchador.

As you can see from the sketch he now has a stache, which by itself is a million times cooler. He will be keeping the unibrow and the chest hair and will be styling a tattoo. Yes! A tattoo! Where does it go you ask. Right under his chest hair, above his belt. It's a big fat RODRIGUEZ.

So far he is only a sketch but in my head he looks pretty cool. Stay tuned I'll start him as soon as I'm done with the paintings for Small Stuff 3.

Serene Monsters

This is my latest project, Serene Monster, for the upcoming Small Stuff 3 show at the Bear and Bird Gallery. It based on a previous sketch I made called 'Los Tres Reyes' (The Three Kings) but this this show I dropped the crowns and added one more monster. The are some color corrections that I still have to make. I think I should be able to finish the painting this week. Is a 6"x 6" canvas, not too time consuming.

Small Stuff Show

Serene Monsters

My last show of the year is Small Stuff 3 at the Bear and Bird gallery. Is a Huge 'cash and carry' group show featuring smaller artworks priced for gift giving. This is the 3rd year that the gallery does this show, that's why is called Small Stuff 3. I'm working on presenting 5 different pieces. The plan so far is to have 2 small paintings and 3 plushies. But of course this could easily change. The first piece I'm working on is a 6x6 acrylic titled Serene Monsters. I'm really excited to get back to painting, since for the last few months the only thing I been doing is sewing. It feels good to switch gears.

Got labels!

I can't believe I almost forgot to put my labels up. Seriously! What was I thinking? I made these myself, if you want to make some of your own I recommend this tutorial. The tutorial is really easy to follow. It has nice step by step pictures. To me the hardest part about the whole project was finding the right ribbon.

What I been up to lately

Last week was fun! Had a couple of concerts, The Sounds @ Revolution Live and Metallica @ the Bank Atlantic Center. Then on Friday Rhianna and I went kayaking in Jupiter. I've had to reschedule that trip twice because of the rain showers that Jupiter's been getting. But finally on Friday we were able to go. Of course when we get there they had forgotten to write us down and didn't have us on the schedule for that night. Great. The lady was really nice though and gave use 2 kayaks and a map and showed us where to go. I don't know how long we where out. It was really dark by the time we got back on the dock. The sunset was sooo pretty, and the water was sooo nice. It really turned out to be a nice adventure.

Then Saturday. TAN TA TAAAAANNNNNN!!!!!! The day the earth stayed in bed. My alarm goes off. It screams for me to get up. GET UP!!! GET UP!!! I have plans to go early to Rock the Stitch. I really want a goodie bag. I wasn't able to get one last year because I underestimated the number of people that would be there. So this year I'll be there 30 minutes before it opens. I'll be sure to get a goodie bag then. No! Flu season has a different plan for me. His plan was very cunning. It was..... staying in bed for the next 4 days. Crap! I did not see that one coming. Neither did I see natural light all day. Just my room and the toilet a couple of times. I completely missed Rock the Stitch, and I really, really wanted to go. Sad.

Then Sunday came, and I'm holding tickets for the freaking Dolphins game. Crap!!!! This would have been my first football game in 2 years. And my cousins, who I haven't seen in years were going to be there too. Anyway, Rhianna went with Dan. They had a great time and took some really nice game pictures. Thanks guys! It was also the first game that Rhianna sees the Dolphins win. Yey for the Dolphins.

On Monday I got enough energy to make it to the doctor where they happily told me that I could have h1n1. Great. After a couple of hours of tests I was happy to hear that I didn't have swine flu and wasn't going to die. Just needed to do a lot of resting. But that's all I been doing for 2 days now! So lets go home for more sleep.

Later that day I took out my new computer that connects to the Internet probably using the neighbors wifi and found out that some else wants to commission a Friendly Wampa. How cool is that?! This is the second one. I'm literally working on both of them at the same time. I'm hoping to finish them this weekend but I lost a lot of time by having to sleep so much.

In conclusion. The flue sucks and I hope it trips and falls, goes to sleep for a long time and is force to watch daytime TV for a week.

Kayaking in a pretty sunset.

Great game pictures guys.
